HI Property Manager:I want to add to Bob's answer. Alarm systems that I am familiar with using one shared line wire directly to the RJxx JK this cord goes in thru the alarm units normal contacts comes back out connects to all phones,answersets, faxes etc.When an alarm is detected, the unit disconnects all phones etc,gets dialtone, dials the alarm company, sends the alarm identity then goes back to normal.The phones should then work ok. I think that you have a defective dialer or related item in the alarm unit.To test, unplug the cord at the RJxx JK that goes to the alarm unit. Go to a phone that is on this line check for dialtone. If OK,it is an alarm unit problem. I hope this additional information is helpful.Some locations require 2 lines.This could be 2 separate JKS or1JK with an 8 wire plug to alarm unit. exbelltel
It sounds like the smoke detectors in the whole bldg. may all go off at once. In other words, if someone is cooking at 2am and the detectors go off in their apt., maybe they will go off in your apt. Ask maintenance if this is what is actually happening. If you get a fluff answer, give a quick call to your local fire dept and talk w. them about it. They may be able to enlighten you. And/or call an alarm company. Good luck!
