My uncle and his girlfriend have been together for a long time. She had a bad stroke a few years ago and is now disabled. She has government assistance with her medical situation. (I'm not all that familiar on how all of that works, so I can't really give much more information) They want to get married, but because of her condition, she can get better assistance without getting legally married. So, my question is this... Can they have a ceremony with a Christian minister or someone else without signing a legal marriage license? If so, does anyone know how to find someone to preform the ceremony?
I think they can have a commitment ceremony in a christian church. It depends on the church though. A non-denominational church would allow them to do it. a Catholic church would not. So it really depends, start calling churches and meeting with ministers. Explain the situation and see what they say. Good luck to your uncle. EDIT: they could always get a friend ordained online to perform the ceremony as well.
It is likely they want a 'commitment ceremony'... I used to work on a military base, and our chaplain would actually do them for the retiree widows/widowers who would sadly lose so much if they got married. Check around for independent wedding ministers in your area and ask them.
It's called a commitment ceremony. Yes it can be performed. But I doubt a christian minister would perform the ceremony without making it legal. I would find a wedding officiant or a JP to do it. good luck. :)
