Harley-Davidson ENGINE HistorY Sometime in 1903 William Harley and three brothers Arthur, William and Walter Davidson, built the first Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Downshift to maintain your ability to accelerate in case you need to, but brake for the actual slowdown to avoid unneeded wear on clutch and engine.
harley did not invent the v twin engine,Indian was first.A list of Indian firsts:electric start,electric lighting,hydraulic brakes,rear suspension, to name a few.Dont know the years research Indian motocycle co. and find out.
1918 - Hydraulic brakes were invented by Malcolm Loughead. 1952 - Hydraulic brakes first used on a motorcycle. This is the best information I can find.hope it helps.
