My advice for you would be to get gloves only if you feel that they will improve your performance. Otherwise, if you feel that they won't make a difference, then you should not use them.
Sharkbite fittings do go by nominal sizes. Copper is sized nominal. PVC however is sized by iron pipe size, (IPS). A 1/2 copper pipe should have fit into a 1/2 sharkbite. They do here in New Mexico anyway. I have repaired a few 1/2 iron pipe leaks using a 3/4 sharkbite as one of the fittings. Don't like doing it, but sometimes when weighing all sides, you do what you have to do for the customer.
