In 1994 a Vietnam veteran who left the Marines a day early and never picked up his discharge papers found himself in my platoon after he brought his daughter into a hospital after a car accident in Chicago. Something in the hospitals check in system showed arrest warrants and the police turned him over to military authorities. Apparently there was a fire in a records building on Camp Pendleton many years ago so it was difficult to verify how much time he had left to serve. He was in my platoon for 3 months before we went out on a Westpac cruise. He didn't train with us obviously, so he sat around the barracks until he got too bored and asked us to give him something to do. It felt pretty weird sending an old man out on working parties like mowing the lawn around the battalion CP. His situation had not been resolved by the time we left on Westpac so he was transferred to another battalion.
