Yes, i've been in Portugal. I'm portuguese and I live in Lisbon (our capital). Sofá is the portuguese version of the arabic word Suffa that means Couch or Sofa in english. We adopted the arabic word because it's an arabic piece of furniture that everyone uses today. Anyway, I never saw anyone being called Sofás, so I'm not sure what you mean with your question...
