carpets are warmer than tile or hardwood floors. Carpeting offers some sound reduction especially in an apt setting for your below neighbors...except when it is time for you to vacuum. one does not need a carpet and most would do better without it.
There are two reasons why we need carpets. The first is that when you have to pee really bad and can't make it to the bathroom, you can just pee on the floor and it will soak it up nice and tidily. The second reason is because carpets are warmer than wooden or cement floors and are softer on you toesies. I recommend carpets if you have arthritis. Also, carpets should be pink with black skulls on them. and maybe a blue turtle.
I think it's mainly personal preference. Carpeting does make the floor warmer---and is much softer on the feet. It comes in a rainbow of hues so it can be utilized to co-ordinate with your decorating scheme. I prefer carpeting because of these reasons but mainly because it is much easier to maintain than hardwood floors. Spills must be wiped up immediately to prevent permanent spots and warping at the seams of hardwood floors. It is much simpler in my estimation to run a sweeper and/or carpet shampooer than to re-finish and buff wooden floors.
