Question:

Why does my boiler not turn on automatically?

I had my zone valve replaced. An electrician confirmed that all the wiring for the entire system was done correctly and there is the correct amount of voltage needed. My boiler will not turn on automatically. I have to turn it on manually. When I turn it on manually, it will not shut off; I have to make sure I turn it off when it gets to 180 degrees. The house is heated while it is on, but it quickly cools down after I shut it off. Any ideas?

Answer:

A boiler works off call for heat from the thermostat. It is possible that someone may have put the wrong kind of thermostat on there. Check the gas valve to say Millivolt or 24volt, match the thermostat accordingly. What do you mean by turn it on automatically, turn it on at the thermostat and let the house warm up it has a limit that it will cycle the cut off and so on as it needs until the thermostat is satisfied. If it runs all the time and doesn't stop beyond 30lbs pressure and 180 to 200 deg F then you have a problem.
Thermostat isn't working. Has nothing to do with the zone valve. Double check your thermostat.
Either the thermostat, or the relay from the thermostat to the boiler is bad. Once either or both are working, the boiler has to be on, at that point the thermostat will regulate the temperature. You need to contact someone that specializes in boilers, or the utility, if its a gas or electric system.
