Question:

Why does my exhaust smell like it is burning?

I just put on my greddy sp2 exhaust system for my nissan maxima. 1999. First i want to know why there is a whole that is threaded on the exhaust system? is something supposed to be there. this hole is close to the catalytic converter. also one bolt for some reason wont screw in to connect the new exhaust to the catalytic converter. would i be ok if i only had one bolt on instead of the two. also my car possibly exhaust smells like it is burning after i drive and leaves a funky smell when the car is on. anyone know answers to these questions

Answer:

For the hole. That sounds like the cap. People who race often install exhaust systems with these holes and caps for the holes. They remove the caps before the race so the exhaust bypasses the converter and muffler. The exhaust dumps strait out instead of going through the rest of the system for better exhaust flow and less exhaust restriction allowing the engine to breath easier. Then after racing they can put the cap on again to make it street legal. It could also be for an optional oxygen sensor. Is the hole threaded? Oxygen sensors screw in, so if it does not have threads it is not for an oxygen sensor. If it is threaded, check to see if you have an oxygen sensor that has not been connected. It comes with a cap so it may be optional. It can cause the back pressure to be uneven and then cause a difference in the cylinders exhausting. You should try to get that bolt in. You might just be cross threading it. If that is not it, you may have to chase it with a tap and die to get it correct. As for the Burning. Did you get any oil or any thing on or in the exhaust? Maybe it is the new rubber mounts that hang the exhaust. Could be the new rings wearing in as well. Also check and make sure there is nothing stuck to the exhaust pipe and manifolds that would melt or burn. May just be that new exhaust smell. You could have not taken the plastic coating off (if there was one). Some exhaust systems ship with a plastic coating to protect it from scratches durring shipping. Or if there was any stickers on it. It could be those burning off. Most exhaust systems have a light coat of oil to keep it from rusting while setting in the warehouse. Could be that. A friend had run over a empty plastic bag from a grocery store that melted to the exhaust once. You can check to see if there is any foreign object stuck to the exhaust.
1. the hole you refer to is probably for an oxygen sensor 2. missing a bolt at the connection will likely lead to an exhaust leak (that can mean annoying noise, incorrect backpressure or fumes coming up inside of the car among other things) 3. Not sure about the smells - could be various problems. Check that nothing is touching the exhaust that is melting. Also a brand new muffler can smell a little odd until it burns off whatever is causing the smell. I can't be sure without smelling it though but that is common. Hope that helps
Unless it's a KN intake with heat shield, don't even bother installing it. Watch what you're buying off OKorder.
Barring a dead rat that somehow made his abode in the muffler at the place where you bought it, the smell is common when installing new exhaust parts and should go away the longer you drive the car! If there were any labels and or stickers on the pipes and muffler, and you didn't peel them off, thats what is stinking! Give it a couple weeks! You should have a real mechanic install a bolt to replace the missing one, as things will loosen up the longer you drive the car, with the resultant noise getting louder by the day!
