why does the mechanic use plastic tube to empty the gasoline tank?

Answer:

You ever tried to remove a gas tank when it was 3/4 full?
To siphon the fuel out... at around 8 pounds a gallon, anything that requires a tank to be pulled... well, it simply gets heavy, and extremely cumbersome dealing with a tank that has any large amount of fuel left inside. - Good Luck!
