Why don't we have sensors for digital cameras which have response curve exactly same as eyes?

Camera film's don't respond to light same as our eyes do. We can view much bigger contrast range than camera can capture, but why do we continue to have this limitation even with digital cameras where we have sensors not film to capture light. Is it because we want the same film feel in our photographs or there is a more fundamental reason to it.
