Answer:

If you were to burn natural gas in a furnace with no convection the temperature of the air mixed with the natural gas would exceed 3000F on the heat exchanger. This is hot enough to vaporize the zinc plating used for corrosion control. Also it is heat that couldn't be utilized very efficiently. If you only need 72F heat the production of 3000F heat would be of no use, not to mention the thermostat would be shutting the flame off every second or two. By forcing air pass the heat exchanger rapidly the heat is transferred from the heat exchanger surface to the moving air which carries the heat away almost as fasr as the exchanger is heated. This fast moving air lowers the heat exchanger surface from 3000F down to a few hundred degrees and further dilutes the air with more cold air to make the temperature required in the room (approx 72F)
