Bangalore was nicknamed the Garden City when it was young, Bangalore when it was older and Benguluru when it got still older ! Bangalore gets two monsoons a year because of its position between Tamilnadu and Kerala. Also, its at a height and so much cooler. Trees and gardens grew well in Bangalore and the rulers then took great care to make a truly garden city. There is still the Cubbon Park and Lalbaug, which fortunately have been left green as yet. But the rest of the city, has changed from the small villas and quiet roads to multi-storey concrete buildings/townships and polluted, noisy roads. The face of Namma Benguluru has sadly changed. Its no more a pensioner's paradise because its so unsafe for old people to walk on the road, dodging traffic and fighting crowds.
Hyder Ali liked the climate of Bangalore and planned a garden named after his sister 'Lal Bee'. Thus began the Lalbagh Botanical Garden. British Rulers too expanded on Lalbagh. They also planned Cubbon Park in the heart of the city. Moreover earlier (till some 15-20 years back) roads were lined on both sides with huge trees which are still visible in some areas. Most residents developed home gardens. slowly it gained the name of Garden City
