Question:

Why is it a crime for inmates to escape from prison or jail?

I think it should be a disciplinary institutional matter not a criminal state matter. was watching prison escapes on Spike a year ago and there was a clip of a Prison in Denmark where a bulldozer was slammed into a prison wall and inmates ran out.It is not or was not(not sure if they changed the law in Denmark) to plan a prison escape or to flee prison.

Answer:

If they (prisoners) are in there (prison) for some crime that they are said to have commited, they're suppose to stay put until they go to court and a judge tells them &you can go home now& or whatever. They're not suppose to 'run out&, even if Big Bubba comes up to the prison with a bulldozer and knocks the building down. They're suppose to stay, and when the roll is called, they're suppose to say, &HERE& when their name is called lol. No answer of here or present from Joe Blow, means that Joe Blow is even in bigger TROUBLE now for leaving before his time. I know that most people would probably try to make a break for the border, hey, it's probably a natural reaction but it isn't wise. The guards or the court will just tack more charges on them when they are finally found. And chances are very high that they will be found. Most times, the dummies don't even leave their old neighborhoods lol.
Because the law says its a crime. I think I got the feel about where you are going with this. Once in prision only three gangs exsist, The AB, aka Arion Brotherhood, BGF, aka Black Gorilla Family, just let a white man use the word Gorilla to describe a black man and watch all hell break loose. Last but not least since they are by far the fastest growing and already have the largest prision gang are the Mexican Mafia. You have learned a valuable lesson-the words TOP CONTRIBUTOR has nothing to do with relevant facts. Are you really ready to defer county, state and federal rights to the discretion of an institution? What if they murdered a few folks on their quest for freedom? You sir are under the age of 30. I will cede your point of view if those that rat out escapes get a reduced sentence and those that shoot esapes dead on sight are absolved of any crime. Now we have a level playing field.
Because when inmates are sent to prison they are legally required to remain incarcerated for whatever time they are sentenced to. When an inmate escapes or tries to escape they are breaking the law. Additionally, it's also a violation of institutional rules to escape form custody as well as possess escape paraphernalia. Escaping from prison is a bad idea since the escapees are usually caught and get more time for escape and however much time they get for whatever crimes they commit while on the run.
It is a crime due to the manhunt that follows. The escape causes area police and public resources to be used and often damage is done that cannot be compensated for by the inmate. It should not be a crime to plan an escape, as long as there is no serious intent to bring the actions into existence. I could easily tell you how to remove expensive and small merchandise from walmart without being noticed. There is unfortunately a 95% likeliness that it would succeed every time you try it. The 5% chance of being caught is because of security workers, even they would have trouble catching you, who are aware of the loophole. It isn't a crime to plan as long as you don't do it.
Their punishment is to spend time in that prison, so by escaping or attempted escape they are trying to get out of the punishment they go from committing another crime.
