Question:

Why is it so hot in my garage?!?!?

I have insulated my 2-car garage, because I want to rent it out to my brother.so why is it still getting hot in there in the afternoon? The room has two air vents and I never turn my air off.it's always on auto.Shouldn't it stay fairly cold in there since it's insulated? What does insulation mean, if not that? How can I get it cold in there, without ripping a hole in my wall and plugging in an AC Unit??? HELP!!!

Answer:

My home has blown in insulation done about 35 years ago, it is settling through the walls and is a real mess in the atticIf you ever need to do anything in the attic, use fiberglass battens instead of BIThe BI in the walls is OK but not great, it gets damp and the insulation value drops, I'm in Puget Sound area and the moisture is very highHope this helps.
Hi there, my house is about the same age, we recently put ceiling bats in and it made a big differenceIt was quite easy as the bats just lay down in placewe`re planning on doing the walls with wall bats when we reclad the outside of the houseAlso you could try a roof ventilation device like a Whirly Bird
we have the blown in stuff.our house is about 85 yrs old.it did make a big difference in the heating bill.thats for sure.
at worst, all you can do is scrape off the excess above the joistsand make sure not to compress any of it! use a board and slide it against the joists to do thisYou're losing the R-value by removing material, but if you compress it with plywood the way it is now, you'll lose almost all of the R-valueIf you can make a small area for storage and leave the rest untouched, that would be bestAlso, If you do decide to remove some insulation, dont bother throwing it onto other areas in the atticthis isnulation is meant to be blown so it can remain fluffyif you throw it on top, it will just end up compressing and lessen the R-value for that area.
Without knowing how the garage was built, wall thickness and type, insulation in the ceiling and on the outside walls, this is hard to answerIs the attic atop the isulation well vented? Heat can really build up there and pour down into your space even with insulation in betweenYou may need to add a roof vent What are these air vents? Where it pulling or pushing air? Insulation is critcal, but it is not all ecompassingWhat you have has to be the right amount, well installed and other air leak areas closed up such as with chaulkWhat about the garage door(s)? Are they possible air leaks Realize your home heating and cooling will not work for the garageIt is sized for your homeYou'll have to find another source for the garage additionYeah, maybe you'll need to run an AC unit thru the wallWhat about heating later on?
