[Edited after typing my question: I just checked and my shower curtain is 100% POLYESTER]I recently moved and purchased an almost cloth-like shower curtain liner (it is not thick plastic like my old one). I have lived here for about three months now and the bottom corner where the shower head is aiming at has already started to brown pretty severely. a) What is the science behind this molding process and why does it seem to enhance with cloth-like materials?b) What is a good way to clean this type of shower liner?Thank you
Everything molds that doesn't dry out between uses. Wash it in detergent and a little bleach. If you are not sure if you can bleach it, then use ammonia. Then hang it back in the shower. Pull it so it is all the way across the rod, and turn on a fan. NOT the exhaust fan, as that will take all the air out of your place, and if you are paying for A/C or heat, that is not going to help the bill. My hubby leaves the damp shower curtain smashed up on one side, and it mildews easily. I wash our shower curtain in bleach and detergent monthly; it's easier than changing his habit. I've tried!
Polyester Shower Curtain Liner
The shower curtain is molding because it isn't drying out between showers. Your best bet is to buy a new shower curtain and make sure it gets good air circulation between showers. Don't bunch the curtain up.let it stay somewhat open so it can air out. When it comes time to clean your shower curtain, you can wash it right in your washer. Just wash it on the Warm water setting along with some rags. Use your regular laundry detergent, but add a little baking soda and some Oxi Clean?. Hang the shower curtain back up straight from the washer. Never machine dry a plastic shower curtain.it will melt in the dryer. It's also possible that a polyester shower curtain would melt, but less likely. The rags will scrub the shower curtain, and the Oxi Clean will bleach and kill any mold or mildew on it. Good luck. -
