You should aerate at least once a year (after dethatching your lawn) in the fall, but no need to aerate more than twice a year (in the spring before you fertilize and in the fall after dethatching).
There is only one way to know for sure. Visit your county agricultural extention office. You will find out anything you want to know free of charge. While you're there, pick up a soil test kit. Follow the instructions that come with the kit and mail your sample to the address listed in the instructions. About a week later you will reicieve the test results along with recomendations on fertilizing, lime etc. This costs about $10.00 or less and will save you a lot of money and time. Also, if you want to grow a particular crop- blueberries for instance- the report will include soil ammendments specific to that crop.(I found out that lime and most fertilizers will kill blueberry plants).
