Question:

why would my 1997 gsxr 750 wire connector melt?

i have a 97 srad and there is a wire connector under the fairing on the left side of the bike by the seat. it has three black wire on each side the connector melted. why would this happen? would it be ok to splice the wires together?

Answer:

You may have a wire in this wire bundle that is shorted to ground. This is not the easiest thing to do on a motorcycle but you must trace this wire through the wiring harness. Look for a wire that may be rubbing against the frame and has chaffed the insulation enough to expose the wire inside. You can splice the wire with no problem. But if you don't find and fix the cause it will only burn up again. The next time it could do even more damage.
could be the connector has a bad connecton , a bad connection will get hot because its arking , like a welder, id make sure u dont cross the wires and splice them one by one and then start the bike and see if they still get hot ,, if they do u may have a short else where
probably the wire was rubbing untill the insulation was gone and exposed the wire causing a short, you can cut and splice but do it with male female connectors so you can dis connect if you need to.
