Question:

Will a floor support a 140 gallon aquarium?

It will be in my room on the second floor. I am building it myself, as well as the stand. Will it come crashing through the floor of my house?

Answer:

Check the spacing of the floor joists and make sure the tank is placed running across them and not along the length of them. You want it to be on at least 3 joists. I have a 135 gallon that I'm now nervous to set up because my house was built crappy and the floor joist are 3ft apart. Most floor joists should be 12 - 16 on center

No, crashing through the floor is just a myth. What it can do is gradually warp the joists, causing a sag and more subtle structural damage the inspecters will notice if the home were to be sold. That said, in any decent built and good condition home can handle the tank on the second floor - just put it along a load bearing wall. I never had a tank that big, but I did have a 110 gallon full of rocks for rockdwelling fish on the upper story of a townhouse with no issues.
probably ok, the weight is usually spread out pretty well, especially if you build a good stand. It'll weigh about 1200 lbs, so the equivalent of a few football players. You do think you could line up football players in a line and they wouldn't go through your floor don't you? Putting it on or over a bearing wall, (up against a wall with a wall directly below) rather than in the middle of the room would be wise. earthquakes, faulty building construction etc. have to be accounted for as well. NOTE: if you rent, your landlord won't accept my calculations and will evict you. Disclaimer: don't call me if your tank goes through the floor and kills someone
Reign is right! Just watch where you place it! But overall you should be fine remember that a gallon of water is 8 pounds so do the math and add the weight of the tank and the weight if everything else you will have in there and your prolly looking at around 1300 pounds! Which if set at a place where there is a load bearing wall will be totally fine! Hope this helps! Merry christmas!
