Question:

Will a rolling chair damage wood floor?

I have a question. I have wood floor, and I just got a new rolling desk chair. Will it damage the floor??I have a plastic mat thing, but it smells like poop and I don't like it.Detailed answer gets 10 points thanks!

Answer:

I have wood floors and is hasnt been a problem for me, but i think it depends on the type of chair and the weight of the person. If you have a cheap chair with plastic wheels and a 200 pound person sliding back and forth on it, youre obviously gonna do some damage. It wouldnt hurt to get a plastic matt for the floor, but i wouldnt say its necessary.
most office chair casters are made of nylon, a hard plastic and defintely will tear up a wood floor. To protect the floor, and to still see your nice wood floor, look into 'glass chair mats'
Chairs of any kind will damage any type of floor aside from bare concrete. Roller chairs will damage wood floors no matter what type of wood it is. A protective mat will reduce that risk considerable. Roller chairs sit on a very small pivot point and the down ward pressure and the constant movement will accelerate the damage. If this is a new mat, the smell will dissipate after awhile so let it ar out awhile. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
If your floors are actual hardwood, the rolling chair could definitely do some damage. I had solid hardwood flooring in my previous home and didn't think the rolling chair could possibly hurt it (after all, it's a smooth surface!), but I ended up having to get one of the plastic mats to protect the floor after only a few weeks because the finish was starting to wear away in places. I also think it depends on the TYPE of wood your floors are, however, because some are more resistant than others. If your floors are wood laminate, the chair won't damage them! Even though hardwood is beautiful and feels so natural, one of the huge benefits of wood laminate is that it is so much more durable - especially for things like rolling chairs, heavy-traffic areas, and pet claws.
