Question:

Will bigger rims ruin my transmission?

Ok, first off please don‘t tell me how bad my car will look or how stupid you think it is to do this to a car. This is my personal taste and this is just my opinion.I have a 2012 Chrysler 300 and want to put 26in rims on it. I‘ve been told that it can ruin the transmission and that it would be very expensive to change the transmission and etc just to make sure the car can handle the rims. I don‘t know very much about cars obviously, so can someone help me out here?

Answer:

I've had plenty of cars with big rims as long as u are not racing or any thing u will be fine
it should ruin the suspension, cvs and what not before it ruins the transmission. it should be able to handle it, the only way it'll ruin the transmission is if you mis-shift, red line a lot (Like A LOT), tow a lot, etc. The rims should not be enough to ruin the transmission. Yes it is true it is expensive to replace / fix the tranny, but it should not be because of your rims that it'll need fixing. If you are putting ugly rims on the car then yes it will ruin the transmission. (I'm doing you a favor here) IN THEORY the extra weight of the rims can ruin the transmission over time, but a) the transmissions are designed to handle carrying weight b) the amount of weight is not a significant amount in a way it will harm the transmission . In better prospective Lets say me and you have the same car Lets say you weigh 200 lbs and I weigh 115 lbs Who's car will break first? That depends on maintenance and what not, the weight is almost irrelevant as the transmission is engineered to handle such.
easy answer,, NO. The problem lies with changing the TIRE Diameter. (ground to the top of tire). This can increase the vehicle speed, thereby causing the vehicle to accelerate slower, but with higher top speed, if you make this size bigger. With 26's, the tire, from rim to tread will be very short and subject to easy damage from road debris or potholes.
