Question:

Will the connection mild steel (painted with red oxide primer) to anodized aluminum cause galvanic corrosion?

If mild steel (painted with red oxide primer) is fastened to anodized aluminum, will there be a galvanic reaction if the assembly is subject to- the exterior environmental elements?- only interior elements? ie: kept dryWhat about galvanized mild steel, will this react differently than primed steel? Thanks,Dean

Answer:

There was a study done on the statue of Liberty in the 1970s when they were doing the restoration project and the results of galvanic action of the copper sheets bolted to the steel supports. The net result was that there has been and would be no adverse effects in a few hundereds of years. I have the article somewhere in my archives. I'm sure it is on the Internet somewhere. Go to the website below. They have a great chart on different types of metals and net reactions and a link to a chart that associate different coatings with slowing the reaction process.
