A faulty wiring circuit may cause a current of half the magnitude of the total load current to flow through the ground system.6, if the current measured is very high, it is likely to have wiring problems. Leakage currents can also be caused by load leaks or poor insulation.
If a net current is detected between the supply current and the return current, the nature of the load and circuit need to be taken into account.
The currents should be equal (and opposite), and the opposing magnetic fields should cancel each other out. If there is no offset, it means that some of the current (called leakage current) is returning from another path, and the only other path is the ground circuit.
