Question:

would a silver rod and silver insulated wire make a better solonoid then standard copper made ones?

im trying to generate and electromagnetic field. i kno silver is the best possible conductor and i can purchase bars semi cheap so i was wondering say you have a 12 volt battery and you construct a solenoid out of silver meaning silver rod and insulated silver coil will it produce a stronger electromagnetic effect versus just a plain steel rod and some copper coiling.

Answer:

No. Silver is a good conductor of electricity but that isn't your problem in designing the solenoid. The steel rod is very good at concentrating the magnetic field and this is very important to creating a strong magnetic field. The wire itself only becomes an issue in particular cases. If you want the strongest field you need many turns of wire. These turns become bulky. Silver wire can be made thinner for the same current rating so if you could get the right type of wire you could have more turns in the same space. This would give a stronger field. But the core should remain iron/steel or some suitable magnetic material.
