It's viable you bought a moment dangerous starter, or your vehicle fried the starter whilst you grew to become the important thingYou will have to determine the voltage the starter is receiving, determine if it is not seized.
First fix the problem with the switchOnce that is done try again if it does not work then use either a multimeter or circuit test light to make sure when you turn the key power flows thru the relayThe relay itself could be bad.
Sounds like there is a break in the ignition switch harness.You are on the right path,that rod rides on the colunm switch,which has a harness connceted,which also runs to the fender mounted solenoid,and starter.Try accessing that harness off the colunm,make sure that the harness is secured to the switch,and no pins or connectors are damaged,and try to use a key.If not,check that harness.Some Ford/Linc.Mercproducts suffer from corroded harnesses,but that is last resort.Good Luck!!!
I could only guess that the ignition switch is busted to a point that it will not make contact for the starter circuit You can check the starter relay on the inner fender by removing the small single wire (that comes from your ignition switch) and jumping 12v from your battery to the terminalI am assuming that you are jumping power across your starter relay and not through it.
