Some good answers but an iron body completely fails when it meets a steel knife blade. An kung-fu stylist I talked with said extended training will make the body too yang and cause imbalance. I guess he was saying too much of this training will wear anyone out and not be beneficial if over done. Isn't that the same for anything?
There are quite a few practices out there that are referred to as Iron Body. Which one are you referring to? What Art? What Style? You say you've been doing it for 7 years but from what I know, and I do know about it since it is part of my art, it is something you do short-term - 1 to 3 years, not long drawn out training. That is when it becomes dangerous and has a negative effect on the body. So, which is it? Who's your teacher is it your TV? Edit: Let's not waste any more precious info on this kid. Last year he posted here asking what he should learn and today he has 7 years Iron Body and in another answer he noted himself as an instructor.
I feel iron body training is well ground in traditional martial arts. It suites every aspect of offense and defense. The idea of iron body isn't actually all that strange to the martial arts. I'm reminded of Goju Ryu's Hojo Undo tools like the makiwara, ude kitae, tou, and jari bako. All of these collectively trains, hardens and conditions the body to not only withstand constant impact (defense) but provides power and strength as well (offense). The benefits, if practiced correctly, are astounding and with phenomenal results! As Sensei Scandal said, specific iron body training isn't to be done long term. It's better to be done for a small while followed by a short break. Hojo Undo is rather different as while you're practicing one, your taking a break from the others. You don't want to have a Hojo Undo marathon.
