Question:

Zero muzzle loader sights?

I was given a used Traditions Buck Hunter Pro inline muzzle loader, the sights have been toyed with, how do I zero them out so I can sight it in. Also what's the best load for this muzzy, the guy gave me his stuff, 295 grain hollow point sabots with pyrodex pellets (100 grains).

Answer:

There okorder /.. On page 11 tells you the type loads you can shoot
I suggest going to a rifle range and taking along a cardboard box, like the ones they use to carry the quarts of motor oil in or similar sized. Also take some targets, thumbtacks and a few small flat stones to anchor the box. Start at just 15 yards and get it centered. Then move the box back to 25 yards. Then on to 50 yards. If you are hitting center at 50 yards, you will be able to sight it at 100 yards. Just be very careful of the ground and backstop. Firing a rifle into the ground at close range could allow the projectile to ricochet and skip up over the backstop.
100 grains of Pyrodex is plenty. Start close (25 yards or so) and fire 2 or 3 shots so you are sure it's grouping. Don't make any adjustments with only one shot. You could have pulled the shot. If they are hitting near each other you know which way to move it. Move the rear sight the way you want the bullet to move. For example, moving the rear sight left will make the bullet hit farther left, raising the rear sight makes the bullet hit higher, etc. For best accuracy, run a cleaning patch after every shot and make sure the barrel is dry before loading it again. You don't want to get the powder wet. Wear ear and eye protection and have fun with your new smoke pole.
WOW!!! On this question, you got three excellent answers. I have been building and shooting muzzleloaders for almost 40 years and I can add nothing substantive to what the others have told you. A tip of my hat goes to the three others, pagamene, tina and geobert2, whose answers were ahead of mine.
