Question:

Can I use a motorcycle tire made for the front on the rear of my bike?

I‘m trying to find white wall tires for my motorcycle. My bike is a ‘78 Suzuki Gs750. My problem is that no one makes a white wall that fits an 18‘ rear rim. But I can find a front tire that will fit. My question is what designates front from rear, and will it hurt to use a front tire on the rear?ps. the tire i‘m thinking of using is 120/90h18 Dunlop K177

Answer:

Yes, you can . Front tire internal cord is woven in direction to optimize for braking forces whereas rear tire cord are woven in direction to optimize for acceleration force. If using a tire designated for front only on the rear, mount so the directional arrows are facing the opposite direction to optimize for acceleration load. Front tires also have a more rounded profile for better steering, but this is ok on rear as long as the tire is reversed. Just make sure the tire you use meets recommended weight and speed rating. I would also recommend one size wider profile on rear

In emergency riding buddies have used front ribbed tires on back to get home and run around couple weeks till payday for new back tire- be careful. Some block tread tires will fit front or back, some wave treads are also used either tire- directional arrows on tire note which way to mount for front or rear. Dunlop and Avon both made multifunction tires- I've used both . I'm not sure if your k177 is a multiuse -check for 2 directional arrows.
front tires are lighter than rear tires, I don't see a problem, but watch the wear. probably allot better tires today than the ones i run in years past. currently running a rear tire on the front of my bike.
Stand outside and wait for the next one.
