do you need to be carful when you work with copper? if so, what safety precautions will you need to take?

Answer:

look up the msds (material safety data sheet) for copper! Health Rating: 3 - Severe (Life) Flammability Rating: 1 - Slight Reactivity Rating: 2 - Moderate Contact Rating: 1 - Slight Doesn't look so bad, basically don't eat it and you will be fine. :P
Only if you're going to be running electricity through it. Or, if you're doing anything that could create sharp edges or splinter off bits, wear light gloves and goggles, but copper is very benign
