Question:

How much does a 327 Chevy V8 engine weigh?

I will be taking the 327 cubic inch V8 engine out of a 1968 Chevrolet C10 pickup and rebuilding it. I need to know if it weighs more than 750 pounds so that I can get the cheapest engine hoist and stand that will lift and hold the weight of this engine.

Answer:

The Gen 1 engine weights run between 550-565 lbs, depending on displacement. Special versions featuring lightweight parts can drop the weight by as much as 50 lbs. Ton and a half cherry picker will work fine for any car/lt. truck engine you're going to run across. 750-1000 lb. engine stand is a good choice, too. 1950's-1960's Chrysler Hemi's run around 700-750 lbs. They're about the heaviest engine put into a car, in recent history. The only thing heavier that I can think of off-hand is the old GMC V6 truck engines from the 1960's. Certain versions of those (and in this case, those, concerns only the 305 and 351 c.in. engines, since everything else was only available commercially) go over 800 lbs.
Take Da arr's advice to buy a good stand. Cheap might save you money but it won't save your life. A 327 has different weights pending on which year it was made it could be from 650 -700 or maybe 600.

On the hoist remember the engine will be up high in air, atleast 4 feet and probbly more like 6 feet at some time.. It's also best to install engine and transmission together as one unit. Bolt trans to engine before putting in (same for removing) The transmission will weight bettwen 115-200 lbs depending on type, size, etc
