Question:

How long does it take to replace a front brake master cylinder on a GSR motorcycle? I got a recall notice from Suzuki?

How much would this normally take to do and cost though it is free from Suzuki. I just need to have a rough estimate of timeAlso what exactly does this entail? Is it a full brake flush and refill and changing out parts or what?

Answer:

The Suzuki GSXR recall is over a misplaced brake bleed vent! The vent was placed too low and gas forming from the brake fluid reacting with rust will accumulate above the bleed vent and the gas that is unable to be removed will form an air pocket decreasing the effectiveness of your front brake slave (wheel) cylinder. The recall will replace the front brake caliper, slave cylinder, flush and, replace the brake fluid. The first notice stated 3.5 hours labor (?) So shop labor at $------ hr. x 3.5 $_____
It's really just a matter of unbolting the master cylinder from the handlebar (I believe it's on the handlebar--I could be wrong) and bolting the new one back on, then connecting the brake line. You don't need a full flush, just to bleed the brake lines. It's a 1 hr job, maybe. But it's a non-paid job so it will get a low priority at the shop, so if they're busy with paying work it could take a long time. They might even promise it in one day and it could take a week or more. I am not the greatest mechanic, but I could do that myself, and I'd ask if they could just give me the parts and let me do it. (I'll pay for the brake fluid myself. 8^) ).
remove and replace the part. Flush and bleed the brake system with new brake fluid. Probably a couple of hours, but ask your service department.
