Question:

Transmission not shifting smoothly?

Problem with transmission shifting?I have a Toyota 2003, its at 80k, auto tran, and the guy at Shell told me a while back that I need to service my transmission, and that it had never been serviced before. I wasnt too sure what that is, but anyways. Just recently, like 3 days ago, my car starting giving me problems shifting. Everything still works fine, but its hard to move from R, to P, to D. Its not as smooth as it used to be!? Im wondering would servicing my transmission fix this problem??? Or could it be something else? Its not making any noise or anything, it is just a bit tought when I try to shift!!! PLEASE HELP! All answers appreciated!

Answer:

no thats why its called automatic not manual
Everybody wants to flush the transmission because that an easy $200. If moving the shifter is hard, that involves the lever and cable that actuate switches that tell the transmission which gear or range to select by computer. The lever is probably OK. I'd suspect the cable is gritty inside, maybe even corrupted with rust. Replacing the cable would not be hard and shouldn't cost as much a flushing the transmission- and flushing should not cost as much as it does either. Your car is awfully young to be having problems with its shifter. Maybe it's influenced by harsh climate. Transmision servicing is not going to affect the way the shifter moves. Usually servicing a transmission is changing the fluid and filter- about an hour job. That is easy. Washing their hands and counting your money is the hardest part.
There's no guarantee that servicing your transmission will cure the problem but if your transmission fluid is not red and clear it needs to be changed. Since you have electronic components in your transmission you might put your transmission on the scanner and some places don't charge for this service just to make sure the electronics are ok. Now when you have a delay on R or D it might be in the main line pressure in your transmission or it might be in the sensors or the electronics in the transmission. A delay might also mean hard seals in the clutch packs but usually when its cold its worse and when it warms up it engages better if its the clutch piston seals. Over heating usually causes hard seals so heat is the biggest enemy of the transmission and a lot of stop and go traffic so highway driving is the best driving to make the transmission last longer because it runs cooler. Now if the transmission filter is plugged up it would or might cause a pressure drop and this a restriction flow to the front pump but at this point it might be a guessing game but at any rate it sounds like a main line pressure problem. I hope this Information helps. good luck Jake
a 4 shift automatic tramsmission is a car with a automatic tramsmission with ONLY 4 gears a regular transmission has i think 7 gears but u only go about up to 4 gears due to the speed imit, but you wouls go up to 1, barely 2 if you were going 40 and 100 would be gear 3
I think you need to take that to a mechanic because bad shifting means either your cables are bad or the whole transmission is bad. But first do a transmission flush and then see how it goes from their.
