Plastic is the cheaper and the more efficient of the two and if you live where there is significant build up in your water you are probably best to go with the plastic pipes. There are several different types of plastic pipes and connections available to the do it yourself-er. If you are paying a plumber to do the work they almost exclusively use pipes and attachments that require a specialized tool for installation (and repairs) so that they alone can repair and make changes to the interior plumbing. I can't recall the name of the company that first created this PVC or ABS pipe system but they tried to corner the market with the creation of their 'system'. They were able to do this for a time but now most big box stores sell a variety of plastic pipe solutions/options for the home. Make sure you look at ALL the PVC/ABS options. They(sorry do not have the time to research the company name) have perfected a system that requires no glue and no special tools for cutting and joining. If you are having the work done you can also insist on which brand of pipes the plumbers use. This will no doubt save you in the long term.
