Question:

03 Hyundai Accent automatic transmission problems?

My 03 Accent has 125k miles on it and just started having problems shifting gears. It has a hard time in reverse, but is fine in 1st. It lurches pretty hard when shifting up, but once on the highway it does fine. When slowing down, it lurches and shifts back and forth into low/high gears. What can I do, or what should I check. The transmission fluid is fine as is the engine oil.

Sadly, the problem is a 90% chance you need a new transmission. Those are all tell tale signs of a failing transmission you described. I would go to 2-3 shops and get quotes both on used and new transmissions. A new transmission for that car with labor is about $1800-$2200 on average. You could try a used transmission.but if it fails you'll have to spend all that money on labor to replace it again and this job takes at least 10 hours for a mechanic.
