There are quite a lot of genres and subgenres, some accepted and used, and others that are just rediculous (funk metal, groove metal, rap metal, forest metal). now im more into extreme metal, so i will list some genres that i know are used as far as extreme metal goes, and a band (it may not be a band that started the genre, just the one that i feal would be a good band to get the hang of the genre) Extreme Metal Genres: Black Metal: Darkthrone Death Metal: Morbid Angel Thrash Metal: Slayer Grindcore: Napalm Death(early) (a few of the subgenres that have been used to further classify a bands sound) Sub-Genres: Blackened Death Metal: Arkhon Infaustus Melodic Death Metal: At The Gates Technical(or Progressive) Death Metal: Pavor Atmospheric Black Metal: Summoning Blackened Thrash Metal: Melechesh Goregrind: Dead Infection (mid) Deathgrind: Carcass (symphonies..album) again this is just my opinion and how i have come to see it. (o yeah and anyone that mentions is like scream-o dont listen to them)
That is a very good question. Some consider Black Sabbath the Grandfathers of Heavy Metal and others say they are just hard rock. In my opinion Heavy Metal is aggressive music with heavy guitars and usually the songs are NOT about sex and girls. I consider heavy bands like Motley Crue and Whitesnake Heavy Rock. Now Metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Iced Earth are usually considered Power Metal. Megadeth and Metallica's first records were considered Thrash Metal. Some consider Megadeths really fast stuff more Speed metal than thrash. Thrash metal usually has the snare drum hit on every quarter note to give it a thrashing sound. Black metal and Death Metal are very heavy and this is where you start getting into what I call growly singing. I am not a big fan of this type of metal so I do not know a lot about it. NU Metal are bands like Korn who I like but consider them more alternative hard rock. For the most part many bands cross over and opinion sets most of the boundaries. If you do a search for Heavy Metal wiki you can find more in depth explanations but even then it is open for debate.
