Question:

18 inch vs 20 inch wheels?

I‘m looking for/going to buy a new car before the end of the month. What are the advantages/disadvantages between smaller/bigger wheels? Cost/value? Handling? Tire wear? Ride? Others? Thanks!

Answer:

A larger diameter wheel is less disturbed by bumps. Also, the larger diameter generated more gyroscopic force for better stability. At the time stability was more important than flickablity because frames were less rigid, and a sport model (such as a CB-F) was far less radical than what we consider a sport bike now. In 1981, Honda widened the front and rear rims on the 750F for better performance. Nowadays, the rear tire on these bikes is roughly the same width as the front tire on a current sport bike!
here we go , as far as cost goes, 20 inch tires are more expensive than 18 inch tires (10 to 15% higher per tire). your ride with good tires will be about the same for both the 18s and 20s and the tire wear is dependent solely on the tread rating of the tires not the rims. larger rims look cool but they do not hold up as well as smaller rims in tight cornering or extreme driving because they have a tendency to flex more under stress. The larger the rim is the more play it will have as far as flex is concerned in an off road or extreme G force driving situation. but if you're not going to be using the vehicle for off road use or driving it like you stole it from the feds, then the only real issue is how much are you willing to spend up front and then on tires periodically.
The bigger wheel, the more expensive. Generally speaking. The bigger wheel, the rougher the ride. Generally speaking. The bigger the wheel, the easier to ruin. Generally speaking. The bigger the wheel, the uglier the design. Generally speaking.
