I want to replace the tires on my 1999 Ford F150 super cab super cab, the original size tires that are on the truck now are 275/60-17 but I want to go with a bigger fatter tire without putting a lift kit in or replacing the rims, I am wonder what is the biggest tire I can go with that's good in all weather conditions and quiet on the highway,
Larger tires will adversely effect handling, stability and life expectancy of the tire itself. I made the mistake of large all terrain tires years ago and will never put them on my truck again. They are worthless in mud, snow and terrible on the street. My speedometer was incorrect because of the height of the tire and I got a ticket. Gas mileage was worse and the noise was awful. Use the recommended tires on your truck. If you are going for looks put on what ever you want. But if you want performance use a recomended size radial tire, with a slightly more aggressive tread design. These tires will drive circles around a truck with big all terrain tires and you will be happy on the road which is 99% of the time anyway.
Some people's got no idea what they're saying.. At the tire shop they will be able to tell you how wide you can go.. 295 for sure.. maybe more.. A vehicle that's got wider tires it's got more surface on the road so it will waste more gas but nothing serious and let say you gonna go on a long trip you just rise the tire pressure and that's it, wider tires in a rear wheel drive truck like yours will give you more traction which is awesome and you should have not that wide tires in the front so you get better cornering and such, 255 front 295 rear.. following the tire size from factory it's only for people that's got no idea what's going on and also the factory it's always looking to minimize expenses when making a car unless it's a performance vehicle.. now related to snow or rain well.. as long as u have 65% thread on it you will be fine.
