My mom uses Red Heart brand sometimesIt really depends on the color and gauge of yarn that she wants.
You can use any yarn that gives a similar gaugeA blanket doesn't have to fit so if the gauge doesn't match exactly then a few inches difference in size won't matter at allTassels and fringes take a lot of yarn so if economy is important I would leave those off.
The yarn in that pattern is kind of what makes the afghan1it is a bulky yarn 2it has a unique texture 3it has a special color changing effect If you substitute another yarn, which you certainly can do, it will not look the same, even if you choose similar colorsThe pattern in that case is pretty basicWork it with a solid colored yarn, and you will get a checkered afghanSo what makes this one look the way it does, is the yarn itselfThey're a yarn companyThey're going to provide patterns that show case their yarnsWhat I suggest is that you scale down the size of the project and do a lap robe instead of an afghanIt's more practical and uses about 1/4 to 1/3 as much yarnChoose a pretty worsted weight yarn instead of a bulky yarn because it will cover more square inches than the same weight of bulky yarn will Then choose a pattern to suit the yarn you chooseIf it is a solid color yarn, knit something with some textureYou could do a basketweave, for exampleIf it is a color changing yarn, as opposed to a variegated yarn, then you could use this pattern and just make fewer or smaller squaresA color changing yarn has long stretches of a color, whereas a variegated yarn changes color every few stitchesIt's the difference between bands of color and short dashes of colorI think variegated yarns look good with ripple stitchesSo that's another option.
If they're Wilton pans, that's a good priceBut ya know what? I've never, in all my 65 years, made cake in square pansWhat's up with that? I use round ones.easier to stack and decorate.
