I have a 97 Volkswagen Jetta auto. I know should of got manual. But my transmission seems like it has a hard time shifting it usually stays at like 3000 rpms for like a 50 secs. then it finally shifts then it does the same thing with all the other gears and sometimes it will get stuck in first gear. And some days it will just shift fine without any problem what should I do? Do I need a new transmission or is there something else I could do to fix it?
haha sell the mr2. lol jk suspension: Edelbrock exhaust: Borla Tires: Bf Goodwrich lights:Oem
Diagnosing a transmission can be difficult, and requires special tools (with VW you need either the dealer scan tool, or Vag-com) i do quite a lot of diagnostic work as side jobs, so i have purchased vag-com, but it is about 500 bucks, so it is not worth buying it for just one diagnostic. Basically in order to identify the problem you need to know what the computer for the transmission is seeing. shifting up and down in a transmission is decided by a battle between two measurements, ground speed, and throttle input. the transmission control module receives inputs from the throttle body, and from the vehicle speed sensor. so if the throttle body is bad or misproggrammed for sake of arguement, it could be giving the transmission control module bad information, causing late shifts, if your speed sensor is bad, it could cause the same thing. perhaps even the computer itself is bad, and not telling the transmission to shift. so what you need to do to accurately diagnose the problem, is look at the signals from the throttle body, the speed sensor, and between the computer and the transmission, to see where the fault lies. Just guessing and throwing parts at it can get expensive fast! i would recommend taking it to a dealer, or a good independant shop that specializes in VW's, and paying them to diagnose it.
