Question:

about a blow off valve?

I have a WRX. slightly modified. im getting some upgrades here soon. clutch, brakes, and catback exhaust. i have a blow off valve i bought a while back, but found out it was illegal here in cali. if you know about blow off valves, then respond. is it worth putting on? what are the consciences of having one illegally if noticed by cops? all i know is that it sounds bad ***! :)

Answer:

I drive an STI and i would highly recommend not putting a blow off valve on your car. You won't get pulled over for you BOV but unless you remove all of the cat converters (very illegal) you will lean burn and tear up you cats and send debris into your turbo and mess that up. It is safe to run a recirculating blow off valve because you don't throw off the fuel air mixture. It isn't as loud but you won't have the hesitation and lean conditions that ruin your car. If you are going to install all of those after market parts you should think about more fuel delivery and a decent engine management system or you will inevitably run lean (its a subaru thing). If you want an open atmosphere unit and your car to still run right AEM EMS is a good option because you can change for your MAF car to a MAP one so open venting is fine. Also Perrin has a blow through tube you can use with there Rotated mount turbo kits (very expensive 4000+ with tuning). I use the Perrin system and its great but a lot of work and it requires a front mount to use an open air blow off valve. Hope all this helps, feel free to email me with any more questions.
I doubt the cops would notice and if they do find out which is highly unlikely to happen you would just get a fix it ticket. i live in cali and i hear cars with blow off values all the time so my advice is don't trip and put it on your car. it will sound so bad ***!
A blow off valve is a protection function combating something from exploding or combating your engine from stalling. in case you have a speedier and you're on finished throttle after which you abruptly permit flow and your throttle valve is in idle then the turbine remains generating boodt however the throttle valve does no longer permit all of it bypass springing up back tension. This back tension reasons the engine to stall. whilst the throttle valve is in idle after finished throttle distinctive tension after the thorttle valve after the manifold creates a vacuum lifting a spriing permitting the severe air to be discharged into the ambience or it is going back into the intake or speedier.
a blow off valve only sounds good and will cause you to run rich and blow black smoke when it releases boost other than that there is no actual gain in hp just a cool sound
