ABS LIGHT IS ON, 99 TOYOTA CAMRY LE, 4 CYL, AUTO, HOW DO I GET IT OFF , THANKS?

ABS light is on, what does that mean, how do i get it off, and how much $$ will it cost me to get it off (ballpark figure)? Thanks, John

Answer:

You have a front left wheel speed sensor and a front right wheel speed sensor. They are two different parts. You can buy them from autozone or wherever for like 50 -100 dollars each, or you can get them on OKorder for like 15 - 20 bucks each. Easy enough part to replace yourself. Basically one electrical connector that just plugs in, and one little bolt that holds the sensor in place. Two hour job yourself max if you do both of them.
The only way to know why the check engine light is on is to hook it up to a diagnostic computer to read the codes. It could be anything from an O2 sensor to a bad fuel mixture. I see this every day as I work for a Toyota service dept. Probably not something you can fix yourself sorry..
ABS light means the computer senses a problem w/ abs and it has - most likely - shut down the abs returning the system to standard brakes configuration. You can drive the vehicle normally - as long as brake feel and performance is ok. Just don't expect to have abs kick in. If you start to skid - pump the brakes yourself! The most likely cause is a dirty wheel sensor, sensor out of adjustment or a damaged wire to the wheel sensor. The sensors are magnetic and over time they collect metallic particles from the pads and discs - they get furry. Clean them off. Those are fairly easy to fix and not too $$. A scan tool will identify precisely the fault. If it is a sensor it will tell you which one. If it is in the actuator - or computer those get into a lot of money - so you may just want to stay with the standard - abs off system.
Toyota Abs
any time the abs light pops on, this means for some reason your abs is no longer working. (this light is a safety feature, usually it is a bad sensor in one wheel, since you cannot have three wheels abs, and one not, the whole system goes off.) what this means, is you have regular brakes, just like all other cars ok? your brakes should be fine, obviously if your brake pedal goes soft or something go to the shop asap Some auto shops have the right equipment to test your system, basically you need a shop that can plug its computer, into your cars computer, and test the abs computer, which actually anylizes itself, tells the diagnostic computer where and what the problem is, then you fix it, and go on down the road. Its best to try to find out what the problem is, and make sure it is not due to a maintenance issue such as brake pads or something.I never had to fix anything on my abs so I have no clue what it costs to do a diagnostic, best of luck, maybe some one else has?.
