Question:

Air suspension question?

In my 97 Lincoln town car signature series I just bought, I turned the air suspension switch to off to see if it would do anything. It didn‘t, so I switched it back to on. Ever since then, the check air suspension light has been on on the dash. Nothing seems to be wrong, the rear is positioned normally so I don‘t see what the problem is? Do I just need to reset it? If I do, please explain how. I read in the owners manual that you need to switch the air suspension switch to off, then back on. Then turn the ignition to on, off, then on. Is this the right procedure? Or could something else be wrong? Thank you for your time.

Answer:

Leave the air switch to on. Disconnect the battery. Negative cable is all that is needed to be disconnected. Turn the key in the on position, wait about 10min or so. Take the key out, reconnect your battery cable. By doing this you just reset the onboard computer, or Powertrain Control Module (PCM),is the brains of the engine control system. This should take care of your problem. Also can clear a check engine light. Good luck.
Something else is wrong, The message is coming on because the the air suspension module is detecting a problem in the system. 1. Without being able to pull codes, make sure that the system can raise and lower with a load put to it. Put a load in the trunk with the key on, or have a couple of people sit on the bumper. The compressor should come on and be able to raise the car. If it achieves proper height, remove the weight from the rear of the car and verify that it will then vent out. 2. If the compressor is running but the car does not seem to go up, check the compressor output. A good compressor will produce at least 100 PSI. If it will not do that, replace the compressor and recheck.
To reset your trouble light in the dash, just remove the negitive battey cable for one minute. Then reconnect it. this is an old machnic trick when we could not fine the problem.
