Question:

Aluminum Chlorohydrate vs Aluminum Chloride?

Are aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum chloride largely the same thing while in a solution of water? Are there any chemical differences? Health differences?

Answer:

Aluminium chlorohydrate is a group of specific aluminium salts having the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m. It is used in deodorants and antiperspirants and as a coagulant in water purification. Aluminium chloride is just AlCl3. The chlorohydrate is just a partially hydrolysed form of AlCl3. So in water both will give you Al3+ Cl- ions as well as the ions from water, so the term 'largely the same thing ' is fine. The health issues are similar; I presume you know about the research on aluminium uptake and alzheimers?
