speed metal (along with thrash) is like black metal's father, except (not always, but usually) black metal is antireligious, atheistic, agnostic, pagan, or satanic. also, it tends to have shrieked vocals along with snarls, growls, and screams. death metal is best known for it's growls and blast beats. like black metal, it was founded heavily from trash. death metal lyrics tend to be violent, antireligious, satanic, or even just social commentary. violence tends to be explored in extremes, such as rape, murder, mutilation, and the like. both emerged during the 80's. speed metal emerged during the late 70's, influenced by punk and british heavy metal. it is best known for it's increased tempos. this genre has influenced basically every other genre of metal.
Black metal is defined by it's rasped or screeched vocals, blast beat drumming and fast riffs. Not all of it is Satanic or Anti-Christian as some may believe. Topics are very broad from sci-fi to nature. Speed metal is much similar to thrash metal. Fast riffs, shouted vocals. Think of it as thrash metal's older brother. Death metal is most well defined by guttural vocals. The guitars can be anywhere from mid-paced to as fast a black metal. Although the more popular bands are known for their gorey themes, many do not conform to this set standard. Lyrics themes are very broad.
