Do your homework 'Ionization' type detectors have a terrible rating in detecting smoldering fires (failure to detect is from 35-54%). Most fatal fires occur during the sleeping hours. I'm thinking that 'photo' detectors are the better safer way t go. But bottom line is if your detector is more than 10 years old JUST REPLACE IT!! PS. most people die from the smoke toxic fumes than the actual fire itself.
