Depends on the size of the company. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees are not normally covered by Federal statutes. If your boss is stupid enough to tell you that is why you got fired, they deserve to get sued. But normally everybody screws up sometimes, so they could come up with a legitimate reason. It is best to keep politics out of the workplace, though. No need to create the friction.
