my mom was recently diagnosed with diabetes, it runs in our family and its made me really wary of what im eating but my problem is i dont know what foods are good and bad and i try to read ingredients on their packets but i really dont know what half the stuff is, its not just sugar intake im worried about, its everything that goes in my food. i want more information on what emulsifiers and food stablizers are, are they good or bad? and which types are good or bad?, if you could give me any help on overall what foods are better for you than others that would help aswel

Egg yolk isn't necessarily good for you. Mustard makes a good emulsifier between oil and vinegar (salad dressing - homemade). But yes, most food additives are not good for you. Best advice I can give - cook from scratch. That way you have complete control of what goes into your food. Oh, and you're probably looking into sugar alternatives. Truvia seems really good, as it's minimally processed, unlike Equal, Splenda, and aspartame (which turns into formaldehyde in your body). Agave nectar is also a really nice sweetener, and it tastes a bit like maple syrup (the real kind), although I'm not certain it's okay for diabetics. Brown rice syrup (can be found at health food stores) is also a really nice, mild sweetener. It's made from brown rice and is also minimally processed. Also, something that I feel that I should point out - weight does play a role in Type 2 diabetes. I'm sure you know this already though. It's best to aim for a BMI of 22, if you're not there already. Also, something that may help you as well is a macrobiotic diet (not a short-term die-t). I'll list a few pages about that below. Hope your mom is doing all right. My family health history consists of diabetes too.

depends. If the additive is chocolate to powdered milk, then no. Stabilisers are to make sure the food stays as fresh or liquid as it should be fresh. Mostly stabilisers and additives are for processed foods with no shelf life and a bland flavour or colour. They are not what you nana would use. Emulsifiers are to change the texture- oil , egg, banana, apple sauce can be emulsifiers. When it's liseted on a food label, usually it will be synthetic. In that case, I don;t eat them, I just don't. I don't spend money on food that I would avoid if I was making it myself.
Several thousand dollars. Copper is near all-time highs right now, and labour is going to run you a lot as well. I would seriously consider buying another house if the aluminum wiring causes you that much concern.
