Depends on your local fire codes. I allow 2 feet.
The smoke detectors don't normally require a ground. However, you are still required to make sure that the ground wires are connected to each other at every junction box. Just coil the ground wire into the back of the box. I really hope that you are using 3 conductor plus ground for this. I really hope that you are not using 2 conductor and using the bare grounding wire for the 3rd wire (interconnect).
