Ball Pythons are easy snakes to keep, as long as you get their basic husbandry correct, and make sure you get one that is a well established, feeding baby (or older snake). A very basic list of necessities to keep a Ball Python truly healthy would include: Enclosure(obviously): Something secure and that will hold heat and humidity. Under tank heater: Some pet shops will tell you that they can be kept warm with overhead lighting, but Ball Pythons require a fairly high humidity level to thrive, and overhead lighting dries this needed humidity out terribly. Snakes also need belly heat to digest their food properly, wich overhead lights do not provide well. Thermostat for heater: this keeps the temps at the appropriate levels, not too hot, not too cool TWO secure hide boxes: one for the warm side, one for the cool side Water dish Substrate (bedding) 2 thermometers: One for the cool side, one for the warm side. Do NOT get those that just stick onto the glass, they are very inaccurate, and don't even measure the temps where your snake is actually laying. Ball Pythons require a hot spot temp of 90-92 degrees to digest their food properly, and be comfortable. The opposite end of the enclosure should be kept in the low 80 degree range. They need to feel safe and secure to eat, therefore the 2 hides are needed so they can thermoregulate properly. The idea of feeding in a different enclosure is a myth. If you are going into your snake's enclosure daily as you should be to handle, check water, spot clean, check temps, etc.there is absolutely no reason that feeding once a week will condition them to think food when you open the enclosure or reach in there. If that were the only time you opened the enclosure, it might pose a problem, but when the snake is properly cared for, they do just fine fed in the same enclosure. Ball Pythons often will not eat if moved out of their comfort zone..aka their home.
My husband and I went out and bought a carbon monoxide detector. That is the only thing I would really be concerned with. You might want to buy a humidifier, the heat will really dry out your sinuses and pregnancy already makes it hard to breathe. Other than that, you are fine.
