Question:

Are Magnetic Levitation rail systems still viable options as light rail transportation in some regions?

I have not seen any information on MagLev in a very long time. Has the Petroleum Auto Industries caused the end to any type of R/D in this area?

Answer:

Still implies that they were at one point. Maglev has always been more expensive than conventional rail. The 19 mile line in Shanghai cost more than $1B to build. It's not very popular because it doesn't go all the way to the city center from the airport, and costs $11 for a 16 minute round trip. The Maglev system in Nagoya is currently operating at about a $26M/year loss. There are several systems in various stages of planning, but only 1, in Beijing, is actually being built now.
